Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest and eminent universities in India. It is also the first Indian university to introduce Geology as a subject. The teachers and students of the university started Geology departments in several other colleges in India. The courses are focused on academics. However, the Geology department assists students in campus placements as well.

The following courses are offered:
B. Sc. Geology (Hons) - 3 years (6 semesters)
M. Sc. (Tech) Geology - 3 years (6 semesters)
M. Sc. Petroleum Geosciences - 2 years (4 semesters)

The faculty members are also actively involved in research and the university is one of the best places in India for aspiring researchers. The placements are good and mostly, Mining and Petroleum companies visit the campus.
