The Geological Survey of India (GSI), founded in 1851, Government organization under Ministry of Mines of India. It is one of the oldest organizations in the world for conducting Geological studies. The organization was formed during British colonization of India to locate and exploit raw goods in order to meet the needs of Britain during industrial revolution. Initially, the organization was restricted to the exploration of metals, coal and oil, but soon started mapping all terrains.

After the Independence of India, the Geological Survey of India has increased exploration and baseline survey activities to meet the needs of country's economic development. Over the years, GSI became a valuable repository of the mineral wealth of the country and attained worldwide recognition. GSI has its headquarters in Kolkata, and regional offices in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Nagpur, Jaipur, Shillong and Kolkata, and offices in almost all Indian states.
