There is clearly a relationship between Geology and the theory of evolution. How did Geology actually contribute to the theory?

There is a strong relationship between Geology and Theory of evolution. In fact, the basic concept of the theory of evolution was proposed by a Geologist, James Hutton. The study of fossil records give enough data to understand the origin and evolution of organisms over millions of years. Paleontology also provides the environment of the organisms, so it becomes fairly easy to compare how they are changing or adapting to the environment. So, Geology provides the basic data required for the theory of evolution.
