Marine Geology (or Geological Oceanography) is the study of the history and structure of the ocean floor. The subject involves Geophysical, Geochemical, Sedimentological and Paleontological studies of the ocean floor and coastal zone. The detailed mapping of the ocean floor and the study of Geological evolution has both military and economic objectives.
Majority of the ocean floor is inaccessible for direct studies due to the cost and efforts involved. So, a lot of the data is collected from the Geophysical studies. Marine restricts to the study of ocean floor where as the other branch of Earth Science, Oceanography, deals with the study of physical and biological aspects of the ocean.
