What is Petroleum Geology?

Petroleum Geology is the study of origin, occurrence, movement, accumulation and exploration of Hydrocarbon fuels. The concepts from several branches of Geology are applied in the subject. The exploration of petroleum deposits generally depends upon the concepts from Structural Geology, Micropaleontology, Sedimentary Petrology, Sedimentology etc. The Seismic interpretation plays a key role as the entire exploration depends upon the interpretation of seismic data. The drilling is generally the last stage as the cost of drilling is extremely high and a decision to drill a well is taken only after careful consideration of all the parameters.

The career opportunities are equally good for both Geologists and Geophysicists. The exploration is of high priority in Petroleum industry unlike Mining where production is considered to be more important. The exploration progresses with the availability of new data and technological advancement. However, it should be noted that the competition is fierce and the availability of dedicated courses in Petroleum Geology makes it even more difficult for Geologists to get jobs in Petroleum industry. The existing deposits are diminishing and the industry keeps looking for new reserves. Moreover, the shifting of the world towards renewable energy sources poses a threat to the Petroleum industry. So, the students need to keep all these things in mind while opting for a career in Petroleum industry.

I don't advice anyone to join Petroleum industry. The oil won't last after next 2 decades. That's the reason whole world is switching to solar panels and electric cars.
That's a little harsh... I hope they'll find some deposits before the existing ones deplete..
If the Petroleum companies want to exploit everything, they can do it within 2 years, but storing it will cost more. However, I agree that Petroleum is not meant to last forever.

Petroleum Geology is in demand at present. You'll be at the middle of career or move on to something else if the industry goes down
